Local Immigration Partnership

The Local Immigration Partnership began in September 2009, was led by the City of Sault Ste. Marie, and made possible by funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The Local Immigration Partnership created a collaborative community effort to research and develop recommendations regarding the settlement and integration of newcomers to Sault Ste. Marie. The end result for the preliminary phase of the partnership has consisted of a community based Local Immigration Partnership advisory committee and a settlement and integration strategy for the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

With community participation from various sectors and newcomers, a collaborative framework of existing settlement services and future recommendations for developing a welcoming community were established. Through this research Local Immigration Partnership staff with the advice of the community LIP members, were able to develop a local settlement strategy. A report on the experience and need of the local immigrant population in the community, current available settlement services, a gaps/needs analysis, a capacity analysis of existing service providers to provide for the needs of newcomers and an overview of findings from all consultations held throughout the research process. The document “Creating a Welcoming Community: A Community Based Settlement and Integration Strategy for Newcomers to Sault Ste. Marie” has been accepted and endorsed by City Council and will now serve as a guide for continued community development with the goal of welcoming and supporting newcomers.
